Fire Station Field Trip

I signed up for a local Meetup.com home school group in my area. They arranged a field trip at a local fire station. We met up at 10:00 am- our group contained mostly younger aged children- my daughter was the oldest at seven years. There were about 18-20 kids in all and around 8-10 adults.

The firemen were ready and waiting and gave us a fantastic presentation of what they do there at the fire station. They introduced themselves a little, told us how many work there, and what positions they have. Then they showed us around the station, where they cook and eat and spend their day, the fitness room, and where their bunks are for sleeping.

They then showed us the trucks- the most exciting part. They had taken them out and washed them just for us. They had an engine and a ladder truck. They showed us what was in each compartment and what they do with it, and then let the kids get in and ‘drive’ and get in the back to see what it was like- they loved it.

Then they showed us how they put on their full gear, and timed the ‘rookie’ to see how long it took him.

They even put the ladder up on the ladder truck with one of the firemen in the bucket, and another climbed up it when it was fully extended.

I was impressed with their thorough presentation, and I learned a lot from it. They gave the kids fireman hats and stickers, and turned on the sirens at the end. My kids loved it. It would be a great event to organize in your area, you just want to ensure that you have a good turnout, to make sure you don’t waste the time of the firemen.
